Justice for victims; punishment for criminals
In the last half century, the same politicians that sowed violence and established criminal governments have made justice a political battleground on their platforms. However, the regime they established yielded no justice.
When individuals involved in crimes spoke about justice, they tricked those who assisted them in gaining power by abusing their labour, resources, and abilities, as well as harming their personalities.
The inclusion of sensitivity about it in the government's manifesto published by the President today demonstrates respect for the victims and their families. It is a statement that no president has made before. Previous presidents did not have to appreciate the victims, but the least they could do was not disparage them. Although they didn't show any respect for the victims, they also didn't refrain from showing them disdain.
They committed horrific acts against the victims and their families. Defendants suspected of murder and disappearances have been appointed to high-level government positions such as governors, ambassadors, ministry secretaries, and advisors. Presidential amnesty was even extended to some offenders.
However, President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka firmly told the nation in his speech delivered in Parliament today that the expectation at the forefront of this mandate is to provide justice to the victims and punishment to the guilty.
"The declarations of the deceased, surviving relatives, and the prayers of the friends of the murdered are included in this mandate. If we don't do justice to it, who will? To whom is it entrusted? If we don't do this, the dreams of justice in this country will die. If that happens, I doubt that even in a dream, the people of our country will have hope for justice and fairness again. Therefore, justice and equity must be re-established in this country. The rule of law must be upheld. As president and government, we are subjected to and bound by the rule of law. No politician or authority figure is above the law.".
