The 34th annual commemoration of the disappeared took place yesterday (October 27) in front of Raddoluwa’s missing persons memorial.
Let's accept the change - let's continue our fight...!
Brother President Anura,
The 34th annual commemoration of the disappeared took place yesterday (October 27) in front of Raddoluwa's missing persons memorial.
Brother Anura, as mothers from families of the disappeared, we visited the party office to give you the invite to the memorial. There we met brother Tilvin, and he accepted the invitation on your behalf. We then visited the presidential secretariat office, and an officer accepted the invitation.
Since 1990, we have been running this memorial program. We didn't invite any presidents during those years. Because all of those people's hands are tainted with our loved ones' blood.
This is the first time we've invited a president to our memorial. It is because of you, brother Anura. Because you are now our president.
Approximately 1000 of our women who arrived yesterday are the members families of the enforced disappeared. Their husbands, sons, or daughters are either forcefully disappeared or killed. You are aware that this was done by the Premadasa regime. Many of our people dedicated their lives for the Janata Vimukthi Peramuna, with the sole purpose of changing this unjust system and establishing a just society.
No one has glanced at us for the past 34 years. At the very least, the JVP showed no concern for us. But we never got angry with the party about it.
We thought and hoped, brother Anura, that you would join us in remembering our loved ones, your brothers and sisters. Come listen to our stories. We were thrilled that you would get on stage and hear you speak about us. But you didn't arrive, brother.
We understand that you have a lot to do as president. You are fully occupied and busy. Therefore, a representative was sent from the Gampaha district. We accepted that brother on your behalf. However, we were disappointed because our expectations were not met. Regardless of how much work there is, we hope that you will prioritise doing justice to your lost and missing brothers and sisters in this effort. Please do not neglect us as previous governments and rulers did.
We will continue to work until justice is served. We hope to receive justice soon in your time.
