Sanctions for Shavendra, Kamal, Pillai?
The Sri Lanka Campaign for Peace & Justice has requested that the United Kingdom impose sanctions on the Chief of Defence Staff and former army commander Shavendra Silva, former Defence Secretary Kamal Gunaratne, and former Eastern LTTE leader and the current party leader of Tamil Makkal Vidhuthalai Pulikal (TMVP) Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, alias 'Pillayan', who ran for office in the Eastern Province in 2008 under the United People's Freedom Alliance, on charges of committing severe crimes against humanity.
The reason is that they continue to enjoy impunity as high-ranking officials for severe human rights violations despite the fact that the war ended ten and a half years ago.
Under the Global Magnitsky Act, the United States had previously placed sanctions on a number of individuals, including Mahinda, Gotabhaya, and Shavendra Silva.
