Last week, a media report highlighted that Judge Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne, the President of the Court of Appeal, is facing potential impeachment proceedings initiated by the National People’s Power (NPP) government.
The President had instructed the relevant departments to expedite 11 cases involving serious, controversial criminal and fraudulent prosecutions. However, the President and the Attorney General have had another conversation about the delays, and following that discussion, there were rumours regarding the removal of the Court of Appeal President.
In response to a query posed by a journalist on Sirasa TV's Satana program yesterday, President Dissanayake stated that the impeachment has been prepared. Therefore, the impeachment will be brought before the Parliament if the President of the Court of Appeal does not step down within the next few days.
