The Raj Kumari Murder Case set for Trial
The Raj Kumari murder case, involving a woman from the Malaiyaha community allegedly tortured and killed in Welikada Police custody in 2023, has been brought to trial. Charges were filed against a sub-inspector and three other officers. On 15th May 2025, the Colombo High Court ordered a pre-trial conference, scheduled for 21st July 2025. The case calls for justice for Raj Kumari, accountability for the perpetrators, and compensation for her family, while strongly condemning torture in all forms.
The Raj Kumari Murder Case set for Trial
R. Raj Kumari, a woman from the Malaiyaha community, was employed at the residence of a wealthy woman in Rajagiriya. The incident was reported in the year 2023. The owner of the house had filed a complaint against her. Basedd on this complaint, Raj Kumari was taken into custody by the Welikada Police. While in police custody, she was allegedly tortured, assaulted and murdered.
In connection with Raj Kumari’s murder, charges were filed against a sub-inspector of the Welikada Police and three other officers. The case was brought before the Colombo High Court on 15th May 2025. A short while ago, after reviewing the facts of the case, High Court Judge R.S.S. Sapuwida ordered a pre-trial conference to be convened against the accused.
Accordingly, the pre-trial conference of the Raj Kumari murder case has been scheduled to be held before the Colombo High Court on 21st July 2025.
