The Nuwara Eliya District meeting on 17th May 2025 featured testimonies from survivors of enforced disappearances (1987–1993) and initiated steps toward justice, compensation, and government dialogue on past abuses.
The Nuwwara Eliya District meeting of the Collective of Survivors of Torture was held on 17th May 2025 at the auditorium of the Nuwara Eliya Public Library.
Focusing on the period between 1987 and 1993, returnees who had been subjected to enforced disappearances and detention shared their eyewitness testimonies. They also revealed information about several detention centres and torture camps that had been operational within the Nuwara Eliya District during that time.
Steps were taken to seek justice, fairness, and compensation for the crimes, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances that occurred during this period. Further actions were also initiated to engage in discussions with the government in this regard.
