A.G. Karunaratne lived at Ovilikanda, Matale. Chandralatha Ranasinghe is Karunaratne's wife. The two married after falling in love, and despite their family's objections, they went to area known as “Rubber Kella”, near the end of Ovilikanda hamlet.

The new family had two children. Karunaratne supported his family by working as a hired hand and operating a small farm. Meanwhile, on the morning of July 14, 1989, the army raided the “rubber kella”. This is because the “rubber kella” was where JVP activists went to hide for protection. Karunaratne was also hauled away that day. It's been 36 years now. His wife still recalls this loss with pain.
