The government of Sri Lanka has failed to prosecute the perpetrators and bring justice to the mass atrocities." Is the new government not ready to change the UN's conclusion?
The new government will have been in power for nearly a year, and the Geneva Human Rights Conference is only three months away.
According to the Geneva Human Rights Council's annual report on Sri Lanka in previous years, they have stated:
"The Sri Lankan government has consistently failed to bring justice for past crimes and mass killings.
"This is the sixth year that has passed without a proper solution to the enforced disappearances in Sri Lanka, as well as to the Easter Sunday attacks that would bring light to the truth, punish the perpetrators, and provide justice to the victims and their families. The previous governments protected the perpetrators, and even the presidential commission appointed to investigate this attack failed to do anything tangible and concrete.
Although one of the primary goals of the new government's mandate was to bring justice to the Easter attacks, it has not yet been able to provide any confirmation of its progress, except for the initiation of a new round of investigations.
After nearly a year of the new government and the much-needed and anticipated transition, the United Nations has to announce that "the new government of Sri Lanka has also failed to bring justice to past crimes and mass killings."
